Vertebroplasty

INTRODUCTION:-

VERTEBROPLASTY :- Minimally invasive ,percutaneous procedure in which an injectable rapidly hardening polymer is placed in a vertebral body with the primary goal to relieve pain and maintain stability of vertebral column. Vertebral augmentation, which includes vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty, are similar spinal procedures in which bone cement is injected through a small hole in the skin into a fractured vertebra to try to relieve back pain caused by a vertebral compression fractures. HOW DOES IT WORKS?

By filling of cement(PMMA),it solidifies  & provides mechanical stability of fracture.

Opposing osteoclastic activity by changing acidotic extracellular environment leads to decrease in neuropathic pain. Read More

INDICATIONS:-

1) FRACTURES:-

A bone fracture is a medical condition where the continuity of the bone is broken.

A significant percentage of bone fractures occur because of high force impact or stress.

However, a fracture may also be the result of some medical conditions which weaken the bones, for example osteoporosis, some cancers, or osteogenesis imperfecta (also known as brittle bone diseases).

A fracture caused by a medical condition is known as a pathological fracture.

– Painful osteoporotic compression fracture.

– Painful collapsing vertebra due to metastatic cancer, refractory to medical management.

– Non-healing traumatic burst fracture.

2) NON FRACTURE:-

-Painful vertebral hemangioma.

-Painful metastasis.

3) COMPLICATION:-

-Cement leakage-neurological complications.

-Pulmonary embolism.
